7th Point of interest: Athanasios Diakos Square

The statue was erected here in 1903 to honour  Athanasios Diakos,  a great national hero of the Greek Revolution against  the Ottoman Empire in 1821. Athanasios Diakos is turning right to face Alamana, the place where he gave his final battle. In his right hand he is holding his broken sword, while in his left hand, he is holding his cloak. His right leg is taking a step forward, to show that he is ready to move ahead!

On the morning of April 23rd, the Turks attacked the Greek forces. Diakos with his 48 men defended the wooden bridge of Alamana near Lamia, although they knew that there was no hope for them to win. He fought bravely, got wounded and was finally taken prisoner. He was brought to Lamia where he was tortured and killed in an extremely violent way.
