6th Point of interest: The building of the Region of Mainland Greece

The building of the Region of Mainland Greece is located in Liberty Square (or, as we call it: “Eleftheria” Square. “Eleftheria” is the Greek word for freedom.).

The building was built in 1924-5 and initially housed the National Bank of Greece.

During the German occupation, it was the Headquarters of the German conquerors. On April 18th, 1941 German planes bombarded Lamia. The building suffered terrible damage, especially on the side of Liberty Square. The scars on its facade are so deep that can be clearly spotted after so many years. When the city was freed in 1944, it became the Headquarters of ELAS (the National Liberation Army) and in 1946 the Central office of the Military Administration of Lamia. In 1950 the Bank sold it to the State and for decades it was the main building of the Municipality of Fthiotida. (Fthiotida is the official name of our area) Today it houses some of the offices of the Region of Mainland Greece.
