5th Point of interest: 6th HIGHSCHOOL OF LAMIA

It is considered to be one of the oldest schools in Central Greece. The Kursum Mosque (Kursum Tzami) once stood on the site of the 6th Gymnasium. It was built in 1816 – during the Ottoman occupation of the area- and had given its name to the entire neighborhood.  The construction of the school began in 1911, after Greece had become an independent state, and was completed in 1914. It was initially used as a Primary School for Girls until 1938

From 1938 to 1978 it housed the 1st Gymnasium for boys. Its function was interrupted during the II World War (1940-44) when it became a Greek Hospital and was used as the German Headquarters. After 1978 it became a mixed High School for both girls and boys. It is also known as “PETRINO”, which means: made of stone (petra = stone in Greek)
