“Γνωρίζω την πόλη μου” (Παιχνίδι Χαμένου Θησαυρού για μαθητές) 1st STEP “Castle of Lamia”

Located on the highest hill of the town, the Castle of Lamia offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area.  It controls the valley of Spercheios  river, the Maliakos gulf, mount Oiti and mount Othris.

The first Walls around Lamia were built in the 5th century BC. We can see parts of them at the Castle and in the centre of the town.

Ancient Greeks, Romans, Byzantine rulers, foreign conquerors like the Franks and the Catalans and finally the Turks occupied the Castle of Lamia. The town and its castle were liberated in 1833.

The central building was constructed by Othon, the first king of the independent Greek state.

It was used as a barrack for troops that guarded the  northern borderline of Greece along mount Othris. The Castle was used for military purposes until the II World War. Today, it houses the Archaeological Museum of Lamia.
